NON-PRINT MEDIA, MASS MEDIA
(RADIO, TELEVISION AND FILMS)
INTRODUCTION
The word “media” means “The main ways that large number of people receive information and entertainment, that television radio and newspapers”(Oxford dictionary).Without communication an individual could never become a human being. Without mass communication an individual could never become part of modern society. So we can say that media has an important role in day today life. Media includes both print and non-print types. In this seminar I am dealing with the topic ‘Non print media’. There are three main sections in this topic. The first section is dealing with ‘the role of television’ in education, the second and third sections dealing with ‘the role of radio in education’ and ‘the role of film in education respectively’. There is a study about non-print media is done by N.R Swrup Sxema and Dr.S. Caberoi. I got idea about this particular topic. And, I went through the websites I studied the information about the non-print media in detailed. The study of this topic will be benefited for me as well as all student teachers. Let me begin with the topic mass media.
MASS MEDIA
The mass media is a diversified collection of media technologies that reach a large audience via mass communication. The mass media is communication that is to a large group or groups of people in a short time frame. This can be written, spoken or broadcast communication. The technologies through which this communication takes place include a variety of outlets. Broadcast media transmit information electronically, via such media as film, radio, recorded music, or television. Digital media comprises both internet and
masscommunication. Internet media comprise such services as email, social media sites, websites, and internet based radio and television. Gutenberg printing press was the first form of mass media in 1450.Mass media is carrying an important role in the world. Next we are going to discussing about the importance of mass media.
IMPORTANCE OF MASS MEDIA
1. Mass media provide information to the mass within a less time.
2. It takes a wide coverage of information regarding anything that is happening in any corner of the world.
3. It brings the entire world to the individual or the classroom.
4. These media easily reach groups, allow repeated use, give more reality, influence attitudes, show cause and effect relationships and ultimately motivated the audience.
5. It sends information to remote places and helps in distant learning.
6. It helps in modification of attitudes, inculcation of desirable values and acquaintance with cultural heritage.
7. Mass media are useful for reinforcing group dynamics and interpersonal communication.
8. Mass media acts as an agency of social change.
9. Mass media as means of communication makes ideas clear to children and help them to acquire correct knowledge. They help in simplifying and in giving vividness to explanation.
Mass media have come to play a fundamental role in modern society. It can be basically
divided into two categories: 1. Print media 2.Non print media Next section I am giving more explanation about non-print media.
Mass media education is now largely dependent on the electronic media which has a good number of inherent advances. It facilitates diverse learning objectives. The electronic media through the variety newness can motivate the learner, stimulate imagination, create and sustain interest. It helps in involving the learner the teaching learning process and keeps the concentration going. They can cater the individual needs. They reduce the burden of the teacher. Non print materials differ from printed materials in several ways. One of the most important differences is that a machine must serve as mediator between the information and the user of non-print materials. Some of the advantageous of non-print media are given below.
ADVANTAGES OF NON-PRINT MEDIA
Non-print is faster
It can report the latest and most recent events. It is very faster than the print media. Access articles online as soon as they are published. Real time updates are just one thing that makes non-print unique.
Non-print are more interactive
One of the benefits of the online news is the interactivity. Online news allows the readers to see other related stories though links at the side. Toolbars allow readers to see the news even when they just simply browsing along the net. More importantly online news allows readers to see the event happening through the videos.

Customization is the next key element of the online subscriptions. Being online allows a huge element of versatility and personalization that print magazines cannot offer.
Non-print is more convenient
Non-print is much more convenient to carry around. Non-print is lighter and therefor more portable. An example is the eBook users can share eBooks with their friends easily through
mail or through their USB’s, possibly making non-print more accessible and cost efficient than print.

Non-print is more environmentally friendly.
According to an article online the books are responsible for four times the greenhouse emission as e-readers. Indeed non-print is environmentally friendly.
Non-print helps the handicapped more

RADIO:
Radio has been playing a vital role in the field of communication since its origin. Radio is a scientific devise that functions are effective auditory instrument for communication since its origin. Even though it works with sound only, it has a power to stimulate values and to increase knowledge and understanding. At one given time radio can simultaneously arrest the attention of thousands of people.
RADIO IN EDUCATION:
It also plays an important role in education. Radio has been used in education for a period of more than 80 years. It has in that time been used in many various ways. It uses to comprise school broadcasting, informal general education, social action programming adult basic education and literacy. In some places of the world it is the only medium of education for children who live in remote areas. It is not only informs, but also inspires the human being for learning more and more. It not only includes the values and virtues but also creates attitudes, interests and application of human life. It can cover a very wide area at the same time. By using programs the teacher has advice suited to help in the development of art, of listening and knowledge and command of language.

TELEVISION:
Electronic TV is a system that presents learning content in various subjects produced by an agency. It is a means of providing formal education as well as non formal. ETV combines both sensory and auditory experiences. It offers uniformity of communication. It is a versatile education vehicle. It stimulates and reinforces the ideas.

It provides live broadcasts of ’on the spot events’. It is a means for leisure time activities. It is a one way communication. Low and poor accessibility, costly affair both production and receiving, difficult to integrate TV and classroom teaching, visuals become a source ofdistraction.
TELEVISION IN EDUCATION:
TV has come to been as a great educational resource for the home. It hasn’t been as widely embraced in the sound the programs may be, showing TV in the classroom seems in-appropriate as if the teacher were unprepared for class, or didn’t know how else to engage students. When teacher use TV in useful ways, they can create a learning environment that dramatically supports learning, especially for kids who struggle with basic content and skills. Through TV kids increase positive social behaviors, increase general academic and intellectual skills, strengthen reading skills , improve math and problem solving skills and increase their knowledge of social studies content.TV can play positive role in child development and public television in particular represents an effective and relatively inexpensive means by which to deliver high educational content.
FILMS:
Motion pictures or films present an abstracted version of the real events omitting unnecessary and unimportant details. A film is a multiple media communication which presents facts in a realistic way, dramatize human relations arouses emotions and transmits attitudes. It may be use for the communication of ideas, attitudes, and experiences to a large number of people. It was the work Dr. Muybridge and Edison that gave birth to motion pictures in the first quarter of the 19th century. First cine films were used in scientific documents. They began to be used in education only by 1930.

Films help in education in a tremendous way. Children who struggle with difficulties and disabilities with any kind of academic curriculum can relate to film. Educational films are one such means of indirect experience. They are specially planned to achieve educational objectives and are made in specific subject areas or teaching purposes. The films can be background films or direct teaching films. They help to promote to achieve a skill, an attitude or to convey certain facts, information phenomena or theory. Film is a leveler- children can relate to it no matter what their family background or confidence to use film effectively in lessons so training and supports are important. Film can be gateway to exploring complex ideas and open children’s eye to other ways of looking at the world. Many educational films shown in schools are part of long series for example films demonstrating scientific principles and experiments tend to be episodic, with each episode devoted to a specific experiment or principle.
Motion pictures motivate students and compel attention. They do provide recreation. It can bring in past& distant present into the classrooms. They are vivid & hence good motivators & help develop good study habits. The teacher selects the film .She should take care to select a film, which would help realize her objectives. For that she should-know the best film available, know the source of these films, be familiar with the content.

CONCLUSION
When I went through the study about non-print media I understood that, as a B.Ed student non-print media helped me to learn more. I could understand the relevance of thenon-print media. The topic non-print media dealt with advantages of non-print media, mass media and the different non-print media such as television, radio, and films and their role in education. In particular non print media has a close relationship with contemporary students have access to in their daily life. The value, belief and understanding of the world views may be constructed from non print media. Non print media is faster, more interactive, more versatile, can be specialised, more convenient, environment friendly. Also, it helped handicapped more. A non-print media assist a teacher improving suitable learning process. These
medias assist a teacher in providing suitable learning experiences to learners,
in the form of audio and or visual perceptions. So as to help them, aquire new
information more effectively. So the non print media have great influence in the classrooms.
